Armenian Remembrance Day

April 24th is remembered for the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1917, and is commemorated worldwide by Armenians. The date April 24th is significant, as this was the date that around 250 Armenian leaders and intellectuals were rounded up in Ottoman Turkey, and, for the most part, murdered. This Armenian population in Ottoman Turkey was to follow.

The genocide memorial in Yerevan is a focal point. Created in the 1960s, the monument was built in two sections. The first consists of huge basalt slabs bending in grief over an eternal flame, and the second is a pointed mast rising high, which symbolises the rebirth of the Armenian people. Hundreds of thousands of people walk to the site, where they place a carnation by the eternal flame, which burns in memory of the all the victims. There are a number of Armenian Genocide memorials in other countries around the world, including 35 in France, 27 in the United States and five in Lebanon.
